Dark Guard

The watchers of the Dark Gate

After the building of Gondolin, a disguised cavern mouth led into the Encircling Mountains at the end of the Dry River. That cavern led to a black tunnel, the Hidden Way that ran beneath the mountains until it reached the Dark Gate, the First of the Seven Gates of Gondolin. That gate had its own detachment of guards, the Dark Guard, who were captained at least for a time by Elemmakil.

The Dark Guard patrolled the darkness of the Way under the mountains, and once an interloper had been taken by the guard, they were not permitted to return the way they had come. Indeed by law the guard should slay any strangers that they captured in the unlit Hidden Way.
