Ghân-buri-Ghân

Chieftain of the Woses of Drúadan Forest

The headman of the Woses of Drúadan Forest at the time of the War of the Ring. He aided the Rohirrim in their ride to the Battle of the Pelennor.

The name Ghân-buri-Gân presumably comes from the (entirely unknown) language of the Drúedain, and for that reason is probably not interpretable. There is, however, an Elvish root Ʒan- which would be pronounced as ghan, and means simply 'Man'. This might be simple coincidence, or it might hint at some influence of Elvish in the development of the tongue of the Drúedain.
