Nogothrim

An Elvish name for the Dwarves

The most usual Sindarin term for 'Dwarf' was naug, derived from a word meaning 'stunted'. Very occasionally another form is seen: nogoth, which shares a similar etymology. Though this is a general term for a Dwarf, it is most commonly seen in relation to the branch of that race known as the Petty-dwarves (Sindarin Noegyth Nibin, where noegyth is the plural of nogoth). There also existed a collective plural, referring to the entire race of Dwarves rather than a number of them; in this case the word was Nogothrim, meaning 'all Dwarves', 'the Dwarf people', and equivalent to the more common Elvish term Naugrim.
