Ulrad

An outlaw of the Gaurwaith

A member of the outlaw band that Túrin joined, and ultimately led, after his self-imposed exile from Doriath. Ulrad travelled with the other outlaws to Bar-en-Danwedh. His fate is not known for certain, but he was likely lost in that stronghold when it was overcome by Orcs.

Notes

1

Ulrad's dates are not specifically recorded, but all indications are that he was at Bar-en-Danwedh when it was betrayed to the Orcs, which would mean that he died with most of the other Gaurwaith in the year I 489.

2

In the names of the traitor Ulfang and his sons, the initial Ul- derives from ulug-, 'hideous' or 'horrible'. It's not established that this applies to Ulrad too, though it would certainly fit his character. The meaning of the final -rad is harder to interpret, but there is a Sindarin word râd meaning 'course', 'path' or 'road' that might conceivably suit Ulrad in a metaphorical sense.
