Up-away

When Barliman Butterbur reported the deaths that occurred during the fighting in Bree, he spoke of one of the Hobbits who died being Willie Banks from up-away. The reference here is not absolutely certain, but we can assume that 'up-away' did not describe Staddle (where most of the Bree-hobbits lived) because the other victim among the Hobbits was named specifically as coming from that village.

Within the town of Bree itself, the Bree-men generally lived on the lower parts of the Bree-hill, while the Bree-hobbits preferred its higher slopes, above the houses of Men. This seems to be what Butterbur was referring to with his phrase 'up-away', suggesting that Willie Banks came from Bree itself, but lived in the high Hobbit dwellings further up the hill than Butterbur's own Inn, and the houses of Men around it.
