The Silmarillion tells us that Araman lay between the mountains of the Pelóri and the Sea, which seem to imply a that it was relatively narrow coastal strip. However, the same source also states that Araman was a wide land of cold plains, so it cannot simply have run along the shoreline. The map included here follows the rough sketch map numbered V in volume IV of The History of Middle-earth, which shows three ranges of mountains running through the region. The implication seems to be that the southern branch of these, curving westwards, represents the northern reach of the Pelóri. Following that assumption, Araman would lie beyond the mountains as described, but also be wide enough to encompass the plains mentioned in the text. |
