Council of Elders

Counsellors to the Lord of the Éothéod

A council that served the Lord of the Éothéd, at least in the time of Eorl the Young. We only have a single reference to the council, and so its membership and purpose remain rather ambiguous. It might be expected that a Council of Elders would exist to provide sage advice to their young King, and doubtless this was part of their purpose. In our sole reference, however, the council is called only after Eorl has single-handedly made a momentous decision - the decision to ride south to the aid of Gondor. Having no part in the decision itself, the council's function seems to have been merely administrative: to organise the mustering of Eorl's Riders in preparation for their long southward journey.
