Dogs

Canine companions of Men and Elves

Common domestic animals in Middle-earth. The greatest of them all was Huan, the Hound of Valinor.

Notes

1

In our world, dogs were bred from wolves, but it's unclear whether this applies in Tolkien's universe. We know that there were hounds in Valinor (specifically, Huan) when Arda was only a few thousand years old, and it's hard to imagine the Valar urgently breeding wolf-stock to produce the first dogs so quickly.
