A name in the legends of the Elves for Isil, the Moon. The name was not merely poetic: Isil was the last brilliant silver flower to appear on the dying branches of Telperion, the White Tree of Valinor. The Valar set it to sail through the airs far above Arda and bring light to the Earth below, guided by the hunter Tilion.
The brighter companion of the Flower of Silver was the last fruit of Laurelin the Golden Tree, from which was formed Anar the Sun. Tilion guided his shining silver flower on uncertain paths, at times coming close to the Sun, at other times straying far from that vessel and Arien its guide. Together they remained in the skies from the closing of the Years of the Trees to bring both Aman and Middle-earth beneath their light.
