The name of the icy wastes in the northern parts of Middle-earth, and especially the great ice-bay of the north and the lands that surrounded it.

The maps included with The Lord of the Rings do not extend far into this region. The northern parts of the map shown here, then, are necessarily speculative, and are adapted from draft maps in volume VII of The History of Middle-earth. Earlier editions of The Lord of the Rings show the label 'Icebay of Forochel' along the coast of the smaller bay in the southwest of this entry's map, but later editions include an arrow next to this label, looping northward to indicate the wider Bay beyond.
