Galador's name is never explicitly translated by Tolkien. In The Etymologies (in volume V of The History of Middle-earth) a name 'Galadhor' appears, but its derivation is unclear, being linked to words for both 'thrive' and 'tree'. The element -dor is possibly from the root tor, 'brother', a presumption based on the fact that Galador's father had both a son and a daughter by the Elf-maid Mithrellas. It should be emphasised that this interpretation is highly speculative. |
