An Orkish word, known to have been used by the Orcs in Beleriand in the First Age to describe their enemies the Noldor. Its origins are unknown, but there is reason to believe that it was adopted and corrupted from Elvish. The Elvish root-word ñgol-, 'wisdom', gave rise to the name Noldor, and also to Golodh, a Sindarin word for one of the Noldor with clear parallels to Golug.
We have only a single recorded use of the word Golug, in an instance where panicking Orcs in fact misapplied it. The account in question describes a time when Túrin and his outlaw companion Orleg sought to spy out a raiding Orc-band, but the Orcs detected them and raised the alarm. Given the lands they were raiding, the Orcs assumed that the enemy were Noldor out of Nargothrond, and shouted Golug! in alarm, whereas the spies were not actually Noldor at all, but Men.
