HedgehogsSmall insect-eating mammals whose most noticeable feature is their thick covering of sharp spines. Though no hedgehog appears directly in any of the tales of the first three Ages, we can be sure that they were at least known in Gondor during the Third Age. When Faramir's men captured Gollum in Ithilien, to still his squirming one of them threatened to stick him 'as full of pins as a hedgehog' (The Two Towers IV 6, The Forbidden Pool), so they were evidently aware of the creature.
