Methed-en-glad

The End of the Wood

A camp or fortress of the land of Dor-Cúarthol, the Land of Bow and Helm set up by Túrin and Beleg in the lands around Amon Rûdh. The exact location of Methed-en-glad is not certain, but it is known to have been eastward from Amon Rûdh, and so most probably lay in the thickened region of forest at Brethil's southern tip, below the Teiglin's inflow into Sirion. The camp at Methed-en-glad (whose name was said to mean 'End of the Wood') was close enough to the hill of Amon Rûdh to see signals sent from its summit.

Notes

1

We have little definitive information about the location of Methed-en-glad, except that it was within signalling range of Amon Rûdh, and that it lay at the 'End of the Wood'. Given those factors, a location within the southern 'end' of Brethil seems to match its description most closely, but other interpretations are possible. As at least partial confirmation of this location, in his index to Unfinished Tales, Christopher Tolkien places Methed-en-glad '...at the edge of the forest south of Teiglin'.
