The northern parts of the island of Númenor were craggy and mountainous, surrounded by steep cliffs descending into the sea. The mountain Sorontil rose out of these highlands, and northeastwards from that mountain a rocky peninsula ran out for some forty miles into the Great Sea. Noted for the many Eagles to be found among its heights, this narrow tongue of land formed the North Cape, the farthest northern extent of Númenor.
