Orgilion

The Day of the Stars

Days of the week

The first of the six days in the Elves' week, Orgilion is Sindarin for 'Day of the Stars'. In Quenya, the same day was called Elenya, with the same meaning. Historically, this Elvish naming convention was passed on to the Númenóreans (who made it the first day of a seven-day week), and so on to the peoples of Middle-earth. The ancient Hobbits translated the name as Sterrendei, and by Frodo's time its name in the Shire was Sterday.
