The Pool

The small lake at Bywater

Map of the Pool

Just before it flowed out from the Shire's Westfarthing into the Eastfarthing, the Water was joined by a tributary from the north. At that point, a small, willow-shrouded lake formed, known as Bywater Pool or (more commonly) just as 'The Pool'.

The village of Bywater lay mainly to the south of the Pool, but Hobbits also lived on its northern side in a row of old Hobbit-holes. The road to Hobbiton ran through the village and under an avenue of trees along the Pool's southern edge. Along this bank - known simply as 'Pool Side' - a series of newer constructions were built during Sharkey's occupation of the Shire.
