The quest of Thorin II Oakenshield and his followers to reclaim Erebor from the Dragon Smaug, accompanied by Bilbo Baggins and, for part of the quest, Gandalf. The quest was successful, but Thorin was slain shortly afterward in the Battle of Five Armies.
