Snails

Spiral-shelled molluscs

Shell-bearing gastropod molluscs. Those of Erebor were particularly noted for their large size.

Doubtless snails were to be found across Middle-earth, as they're often used as analogies or similes. They're only literally described, however, in a single place: in the shadowy alcove that held the secret Dwarf-door on the side of the Lonely Mountain.
