After the Dagor Bragollach, the darkness of Morgoth began to corrupt the northern forests of Dorthonion, and they came to be called Taur-nu-Fuin, the Forest under Nightshade. This name is sometimes also used for the land of Dorthonion itself, after its capture by Morgoth.
Notes
1 |
Taur-nu-Fuin is a name that conjures the idea of a forest in the grip of a murky darkness, and indeed the name was later used for another great Forest that fell under evil influence. In the Third Age, the same name would be occasionally be used of Mirkwood, whose name can be seen as a rendering of Elvish Taur-nu-Fuin.
