A great-grandson of Gerontius, the Old Took, Adelard's father was Flambard Took. He had four children of his own, including Reginard and Everard. Like most of the Took clan, Adelard had a heroic name: in his case, Adelard comes from a Teutonic word meaning 'resolute' or 'courageous'.

Adelard was a regular visitor to Bag End, and was apparently well known for taking Bilbo's umbrellas. After the Farewell Party, Adelard was left the gift of an umbrella of his own. He lived on through the War of the Ring, and died in the second year of the Fourth Age, at the age of ninety-five.

Notes

1

Editions of The Lord of the Rings published prior to 2004 incorrectly show Adelard as having three daughters, which is corrected to two daughters in later editions.
