Astaldo

The surname of Tulkas

A title or surname given to the Vala Tulkas, said to be the greatest of all the Valar in feats of strength and endurance. Also called Tulkas the Strong, this being did not enter the world with other Valar, but only later came to their aid in their ancient wars against Melkor. It was through the arrival of Tulkas Astaldo (That is, Tulkas the Valiant) that the Valar were finally able to defeat Melkor and imprison him in Valinor. After Tulkas' valiant intervention, the Valar brought peace and order to the young world, at least for the three ages before Melkor was freed from his imprisonment, and began to trouble Arda once again.

In earlier texts, Tulkas is given the surname Poldórëa, interpreted as 'strong' or 'mighty' (or literally 'muscular'). Even in the published Silmarillion, although this name has disappeared, its influence can still be seen in references to 'Tulkas the Strong'. In later texts, Tolkien chose to replace the surname Poldórëa with Astaldo, with the slightly different meaning of 'valiant' rather than 'strong'.
