A title signifying great strength and courage. In the Elvish form Astaldo it was given to the Vala Tulkas, and also to Fingon, son of Fingolfin and High King of the Noldor.
Fingon |
The eldest son of Fingolfin, who earned his title of 'Valiant' even before the Noldor left Valinor. In Middle-earth, among his most heroic acts was the rescue of Maedhros from Thangorodrim. After his father's death he became High King of the Noldor, and he ruled until the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, in which he was slain. So powerful was Fingon's spirit that a white flame was said to have flashed from his helmet as he was struck down by Gothmog's axe. |
Tulkas |
The strongest and most warlike of the Valar, who joined his companions in their battles against Melkor. In those ancient conflicts in the farthest depths of time, Melkor came close to taking control of Arda for himself, but Tulkas the Valiant came into the world and aided the Valar. Through his strength, the Valar were able to drive Melkor out of the world for a time, and redress some of the chaos he had wreaked. |
