Egladil

The Angle of Lórien

Map of Egladil

The name given by the people of Lórien to their lands between the courses of the rivers Anduin and Celebrant. These were the most populated parts of the country, where the tree-city of Caras Galadhon was to be found. The name is rendered into English as the 'Angle' (a name not to be confused with the point between the rivers Hoarwell and Loudwater, far to the northwest of Lórien, which shared this name).

Notes

1

The egla- element of this name is translated by Tolkien as simply 'Elven', but in fact it seems to refer more specifically to the Sindar (whose old name for themselves was Eglath, the Forsaken People). Taken together with the fact that the entire name Egladil is Sindarin rather than Silvan, this implies that the name was given to this region by the Sindarin lords who ruled Lórien before the coming of Galadriel and Celeborn.
