Emyn Muil

The hill-range around Nen Hithoel

Map of the Emyn Muil

The range of hills that massed on either side of the Anduin above the inflow of the Entwash. At one time they marked the northern borders of Gondor; Frodo and Sam crossed them on their journey to Mordor.

Notes

1

The pronunciation of y in Elvish words varied between different groups of speakers. Across most of Middle-earth, the usual pronunciation of emyn would have been 'e'moon' (to rhyme with the French word lune). In Gondor, however, y was pronounced as something closer to i. Given the close association of these hills with Gondor, the Gondorian pronunciation is preferred above.
