Father of the IsleHonoured title of the Kings of NúmenorA term apparently used, at least in some form, as a title of the Kings of Númenor. We have only a single reference to the term, and that is somewhat obscure in form. In the tale of Aldarion and Erendis (in Unfinished Tales) King Tar-Meneldur tells his son and heir Aldarion that he '...one day must be King and Father of this Isle.' The capitalisation of 'Father' implies that this is more than a mere informal comment, and it was meaningful to both Meneldur and Aldarion (the fifth and sixth Kings, respectively). It seems to follow that the earlier Kings of Númenor, at least, saw themselves as in some sense the father of their realm, though whether this conception persisted to the last days of Númenor is unclear. For a full list of all those who potentially held this title, see the entry for King of Númenor. Notes
