Ill-fateA false name claimed by Túrin of his fatherBy the time Túrin son of Húrin was led to Nargothrond by Gwindor, he had already suffered many calamities. Thinking himself exiled from Doriath, he had been betrayed to the Orcs, and then unwittingly slain his rescuer and friend Beleg. Thinking these disasters linked to a curse on his name and his family, he sought to conceal his identity from the Elves of Nargothrond, and from the evil of Morgoth. Thus he gave himself a new identity, Agarwaen son of Úmarth, meaning 'Bloodstained' son of 'Ill-fate'. Given his experiences to that time, he must indeed have seen himself as the son of Ill-fate, but worse was to come. By his actions, Nargothrond would fall, and he would unknowingly wed his own sister before ultimately choosing to fall on his sword.
