The Quenya name for the first month of the year, and hence the name most commonly used outside the regions under the influence the Dúnedain (who preferred to use the Sindarin form, Narwain). The name combines nar 'Sun' and vinyë 'new', and hence means 'new Sun' or 'new year'. On a modern calendar, allowing for the shift of the seasons from the ancient days when it was in common use, Narvinyë would run between 23 December (approximately the date of the Winter Solstice) and 21 January.
