Saxifrage

A low-growing plant of stony landscapes

"The grots and rocky walls were already starred with saxifrages and stonecrops."
The Two Towers IV 4
Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit

A flowering plant adapted to growing in difficult conditions, anchoring itself to stones and rocks with its roots. Saxifrage produces mats of thin mossy leaves, from which clusters of flowers appear, typically white or yellow in colour. The plant tends to prefer colder or temperate environments, but it was found by Frodo and Sam, among many other plants, as they travelled through the warmer climes of Ithilien. There they found it growing beside stonecrop, another low-lying plant adapted to living in the same harsh stony conditions.
