One of the daughters of King Thengel of Rohan, Théodwyn was the youngest sister of Thengel's only son, Théoden, who succeeded his father as King of Rohan. After the birth of her children Éomer and Éowyn, her husband Éomund was slain by Orcs, and Théodwyn herself died of a sickness shortly afterwards. Her orphaned children were taken in by their uncle King Théoden to grow up in the royal house at Edoras. On Théoden's death, his own son Théodred having been slain in battle, the Kingship passed to Théodwyn's son Éomer.

The date of Théodwyn's death is uncertain. After her husband was slain in III 3002, we're told that she died of a sickness 'not long after' (The Lord of the Rings Appendix A II, The Kings of the Mark), but it remains unclear whether this was in the same year.

There is no direct evidence describing where Théodwyn lived, but as a daughter of the King of Rohan, it's reasonable to assume that she was raised in the royal household at Edoras. After she wed Éomund, she would presumably have removed to his seat at Aldburg in the Folde.

In Old English, éo represents a diphthong, a single vowel sound combining ay with a short o as in 'dot' or 'cloth'. So éo is pronounced somewhat like 'ayo', but as a single sound.
