Wild Wood

The fabulous forest of eastern Middle-earth

A mysterious and possibly mythical wood associated with the origins of the Elves. If the Wild Wood existed at all, it would seem to have grown on the eastern shores of Cuiviénen, the Water of Awakening, where the first Elves were brought into existence. Our information about this forest, however, is limited to a single indirect mention, and so it is conceivable that the Wild Wood was merely a fanciful addition to the Elves' stories of their origins.

It's hard to be sure whether the Wild Wood existed at all, but if it did, it must have been in the place where the Elves first awakened. That would place it to the east of the great Inland Sea of Helcar above the place called Cuiviénen, the Water of Awakening. It might be noted that the story of the first Elves in The Silmarillion there is no mention of any wood or forest that might take the place of the Wild Wood, but nor is there anything in that account that makes its existence impossible.
