There were two historical Ecthelions who preceded Ecthelion II, and he was presumably named for one or both of them. Ecthelion I was his direct ancestor, who ruled Gondor some three centuries before his time, but the name ultimately came from a famous Elf of Gondolin, Ecthelion of the Fountain, who was slain before the end of the First Age.
See the entry for the first Ecthelion for more on the derivation of this name. |
