Eorlingas

The followers of Eorl and his house

A name taken by the Rohirrim in their own tongue, signifying the followers and kin of Eorl the Young.

Notes

1

The Old English word ending -ing had several meanings depending on context, broadly describing people or things who shared a common source (so for example the Easterlings were people who originated the East). It could also carry the narrower meaning of 'sons' or 'descendants' (so Théoden son of Thengel was titled Thengling). In Eorlingas the meaning also seems to be 'sons' (the modern English 'Sons of Eorl' is also used) but here the meaning is more figurative, referring to all the Rohirrim as 'sons' of Eorl the 'father' of their country.
