An Elvish name originally given to the Men of the Éothéod (or, more properly, their cavalry) by the Gondorians. It was formed from the combination of Sindarin elements roch 'horse', hîr 'lord or master', and rim, 'host, great number', so the phrase translated as 'Host of the Horse-masters'. It was recorded in Gondor in the simplified form Rochirrim, and from that evolved the common name for this people at the end of the Third Age: the Rohirrim. Notes
