Notes

1

Tolkien doesn't offer a direct translation of Erkenbrand's name, but it appears to derive from Old English eorcan brand, literally meaning 'precious sword'. The word appears especially in eorcanstán, 'precious stone' (which is the source of the name 'Arkenstone'), so Erkenbrand's name possibly implies 'jewelled sword'.
