King of CalenardhonA title of Eorl the Young
When the people of the Éothéod were granted the land of Calenardhon in III 2510, Eorl the Young became its first King. This was a title that would be known historically as 'King of Rohan', but at that time the name Rohan had yet to be coined. So, especially in Gondor, Eorl was instead usually styled the 'King of Calenardhon'. It was only later, after Hallas created the name Rohan 'Horse-land' for the new kingdom, that Eorl's successors acquired the more familiar form of the title. Notes
