Lord of the Fields of Rohan

Treebeard’s title for the King of the Rohirrim

One of many titles used for the Kings of the land of Rohan, a line of rulers descended from Eorl the Young who founded the land in III 2510, some five centuries before the War of the Ring. Most of the main settlements and fortifications of Rohan lay along the line of the White Mountains in the south, while much of the rest of the realm consisted of wide plains of rolling grassland divided by the valley of the river Entwash.

To the north of Rohan lay Fangorn Forest, the deep and ancient wood that the Rohirrim named the Entwood. Within that wood the Ents still walked, Shepherds of the Trees from the oldest times of Middle-earth who had dwelt there from long before the coming of Eorl. It was from these Ents that the title 'Lord of the Fields of Rohan' came: it was used by Treebeard for the King of Rohan. This no doubt reflects the particular perspective of the Ents; from their forest domain in the north, far from the towns along the Mountains, the treeless fields of Rohan would have been its most distinctive feature.
