More commonly called Dunlendings, the Men of Dunland were a people descended from the Hill-men of the White Mountains, who settled in the lands beyond the Gap of Rohan in the Second Age. A warlike people, they cared little for the Dúnedain and despised the Rohirrim. For many years they occupied the Ring of Isengard on Rohan's northern border, and in the year of the Long Winter they invaded and occupied Rohan, only to be driven out the following year. At the time of the War of the Ring, Saruman recruited the Dunlendings to his cause and sent them into battle against their old enemies, the Rohirrim.
