Sûza

The Westron name for the Shire

In the Common Speech, a sûza referred to an independently organised district, especially one around a local capital. The word seems to have been used in Gondor for any of the main divisions of the realm (Lebennin, Ithilien, and so on). Its most famous use was for the land of the Hobbits in the northern parts of Middle-earth, west of Bree. For this region, the name Sûza-t1 was translated by Tolkien into a much more familiar form: 'The Shire'.

Notes

1

The -t suffix here is a definite article, equivalent to the 'The' in 'The Shire'.
