Tar-Telemnar

The Eldarin name of Ar-Gimilzôr

The twenty-third ruler of Númenor, and the fourth to take a royal name in Adûnaic rather than the traditional Elvish. Indeed, Ar-Gimilzôr broke strongly with Númenor's historic association with the Elves, banning them from travelling to the island, and prohibiting the use of their languages. It is ironic, then, that the Elvish form of his name is recorded: Tar-Telemnar. Ar-Gimilzôr's bans and prohibitions were overturned after his death by his elder son and Heir Tar-Palantir.

Notes

1

Conventionally, the Elvish names of the later Kings of Númenor were translations or adaptations of their Adûnaic names, though in the case of Tar-Telemnar, this does not seem to hold in a literal sense. His Adûnaic name Gimilzôr seems to mean 'star fire', whereas the Elvish version apparently contains telem 'silver', rather than a word for 'star'. The intended connection is perhaps via the idea of silver starlight, perhaps under the influence of telmë, 'heaven'.
