AtanatáriThe Fathers of Men
Among the many names used by the Elves for the race of Men, perhaps the most common was a word meaning 'Second People'. In Quenya this was Atani, with the Sindarin version of the same name being Edain. Of all Men, those with special importance to the Elves were the Men of the Three Houses, the first to cross the Blue Mountains into Beleriand, and the constant allies of the Eldar in their Wars against Morgoth. In Sindarin, the name Edain evolved to be used especially of these Men, but in Quenya a special word was applied to them: Atanatári, the Fathers of Men.
