Elves of the Darkness

The Moriquendi

Quendi
(All Elves)
Eldar
Vanyar
Noldor
Teleri
Falmari
Sindar
Nandor
Avari

The main branches of the Elves of the Darkness are shown here in bold text. In addition to the Avari who refused the summons of the Valar, at least two divisions of the Teleri also remained in Middle-earth: the Sindar and the Nandor.

A translation of Moriquendi, the name given to those Elves who never reached Aman or saw the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor. This included not only the Avari, who had rejected the summons of the Valar to travel into the West, but also the Úmanyar, those who had set out on the Great Journey but had ultimately remained in Middle-earth.

Notes

1

Most of the Sindar belonged to the Elves of the Darkness, having remained in Beleriand and never completed the journey across the Great Sea to Aman. There was a sole exception in their King, Elu Thingol, who in ancient times had travelled to Valinor and seen the Light of the Trees. While the Sindar as a people, then, were Elves of the Darkness, their ruler was counted among the Elves of the Light.
