Nandor

The followers of Lenwë

Telerin Elves who turned aside from the Great Journey east of the Misty Mountains, and journeyed down the river Anduin. Some few later came into Beleriand and dwelt in Ossiriand, while those that remained founded realms of their own. The people of Lórien were of this kind, as were the Wood-elves of Mirkwood.

Notes

1

This is the meaning given by Christopher Tolkien in his index to The Silmarillion, apparently based on the word-root ndan-, meaning 'back'. Given that the Nandor journeyed away down the Vales of Anduin, it might be tempting to associate their name with the more common nan, 'valley', but this does not seem to be correct.
