Mardil Voronwë

First of the Ruling Stewards of Gondor

Stewards of Gondor

Son of Vorondil the Hunter, and Steward to Kings Eärnil II and Eärnur of Gondor. After Eärnur's loss in Minas Morgul, Mardil became the first Ruling Steward of Gondor.

Notes

1

The date of Mardil's birth appears only in The History of Middle-earth volume XII, The Peoples of Middle-earth. It cannot therefore be considered completely reliable.

2

Mardil only became Ruling Steward after the loss of King Eärnur in III 2050, but before this he had served the Kings of Gondor as Steward for some time. Mardil had inherited the Stewardship from his father Vorondil in III 2029, and served King Eärnil II for fourteen years, and then Eärnil's successor Eärnur throughout that King's brief seven-year reign.

By the time Mardil took up the rule of Gondor, then, he had already been Steward to Gondor's last Kings for a period of twenty-one years. Including his time as Ruling Steward, then, Mardil held the post of Steward of Gondor for a total of fifty-one years.
