Originally from Lossarnach, among the valleys on the southern side of the White Mountains, Morwen came to the court of King Thengel of Rohan to become his young bride. She was known among the Rohirrim for her graceful and proud bearing, qualities that seem to have given rise to her name 'Steelsheen'. Tradition said that she had passed on these qualities to her granddaughter, Éowyn.

Notes

1

The meaning behind the name Steelsheen is not explained, but it clearly mirrors the surname of an earlier Morwen, who lived during the First Age and was known as Morwen Elfsheen. For the sobriquet Elfsheen, we do have an explanation, and it was said to describe the Elf-like glint in that earlier Morwen's eyes. On that basis, we might expect that Steelsheen suggested a steely glint in the eyes of Queen Morwen of Rohan.
